British Red Cross

The British Red Cross helps vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees access essential services and adjust to life in a new country.

 

Refugee Services

  • An Orientation Service which helps provide short term support for newly arrived asylum seekers and move on support for people given refugee status.
  • A Drop in Centre atToxtethTown Hall(15 High Park Street) every Wednesdays 12-4pm.

International Tracing and Message Services

  • Tracing family members, when families are separated by war, disaster or migration we can help trace missing relatives.
  • Delivering family news, when normal means of communication have broken down due to war or disaster, Red Cross messages can still get through to anxious relatives.
  • Certificate of detention, if you were visited by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) while imprisoned, we may be able to provide confirmation of your detention.

FamilyReunionTravel Assistance

  • The Family Reunion Travel Assistance (FRTA) Scheme primarily aims to provide assistance to individuals with the travel costs for the reunion of refugee families.
  • The British Red Cross is unable to assist clients in applying for Family Reunion visas.
  • At no point can help to clients be guaranteed and client expectations should be managed accordingly at all stages of the process.

Careline

Careline assists those with no recourse to public funds who require support due to disabilities or mental health problems. Careline can provide support, care packages and accommodation, depending upon the needs of the individual. To access services refer the individual via the telephone number above and subject to their immigration status an assessment will be arranged by the service.

Merseyside Refugee Support Network (MRSN) offers a range of practical, case by case help to asylum seekers including:

  • Initial advice and guidance, day to day information and signposting services
  • Employment skills development and job-search
  • ESOL classes
  • Benefits and housing advocacy and signposting
  • Signposting to health and immigration advisers
  • MRSN also spearheads a city wide network of organisations which work with asylum seekers and organise network meetings.

MRSN ‘s sister organisation, Merseyside Network for Change (MNfC) offers opportunities for community empowerment as well helping people from BME / asylum and refugee backgrounds who want to set up an organisation.

Refugee Action

  • Refugee Action offers advice and welcome to newly arrived asylum seekers, helps them to make their initial claim and provides early accommodation prior to dispersal. They also offer case work to asylum seekers at different stages of the process which can be accessed via appointment at their One Stop Shopopen on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Please ring the appointment line (0151 702 6310)   between 9.30am-12.30pm to book. Please be aware that the line can be very busy and you may need to make several attempts.
  • On Wednesdays clients can make an appointment to use office telephones and computers enabling them to make their own inquiries regarding their case. If an appointment is not booked, clients can come into the office on Pleasant Street, on the off chance, but may be turned away if all facilities are in use.

Somewhere Else offers opportunities for peace, reflection and meeting new people through gathering in a community around the making and sharing of bread. Asylum seekers are very welcome. Opening Hours: Breadmaking is on Tuesday and Thursday at 10.30am, there are prayers at 12.30pm with a lunch at 1pm. On the third Sunday of each month at 11am Somewhere Else meets to worship together in fresh and creative ways.
